Kotebe University of Education has undergone a series of historical changes since it was founded in 1959 as a program at Haile Selassie I University. In 1968, the program was upgraded to the College of Teacher Education, and in 1969, it was transferred to the current Addis Ababa Technical and Vocational College. In 1976, it was relocated to its current location and named Kotebe College of Teacher Education (KCTE), after the name of the local area. Starting from that time, KCTE has been providing teacher training in diploma programs for subjects such as Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, languages, technical and vocational education, as well as Health and Physical Education. In 1989, KCTE expanded its offerings by introducing degree programs in Mathematics, Health and Physical Education, English Language and Literature, and Ethiopian Languages and Literature. Subsequently, in 1995, Geography and History programs were included as well. Following the change in regime in 1991 and the implementation of the Education Policy in 1994, KCTE underwent administrative changes in 1997, as it was placed under the administration of Addis Ababa City. Consequently, the degree program, with the exception of health and physical education, was suspended. The administrative team at KCTE worked diligently to explore options for resuming the degree program. Eventually, in 2007, in collaboration with Bahr Dar University, the degree program was reinstated. The administrative challenges associated with the affiliation of the college for the degree programs were resolved when KCTE was elevated to the status of Kotebe University College (KUC) in 2014. Two years later, in 2016, the Addis Ababa City Administration further upgraded KUC to Kotebe Metropolitan University (KMU). The transformation of Kotebe Metropolitan University (KMU) into a comprehensive city university resulted in significant shifts in its mandate, vision, mission, and organizational structure. With a renewed focus on urban issues, KMU adopted the motto "Committed to Sustainable Urban Development." This change allowed KMU to make substantial contributions in the realms of academia, research, and community service. KMU expanded its programs strategically to address the human resource requirements of Addis Ababa city and Ethiopia as a whole. The university conducted extensive research with implications at both regional and national levels, tackling a wide range of subjects. Additionally, KMU actively engaged in providing valuable community services to the residents of Addis Ababa. This demonstrated KMU's commitment to serving the local community while making meaningful contributions in academic and research domains. Recognizing the significant role and contributions of Kotebe Metropolitan University (KMU) in the field of education, as well as the growing need for a specialized education-focused institution, the House of Parliament (HoP) of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia passed Proclamation No. 1263/2014 on October 6, 2021. This proclamation officially transformed KMU into Kotebe University of Education (KUE). Under this proclamation, the accountability of KUE shifted from the Addis Ababa city administration to the Ministry of Education (MoE). As a result, there was a need for a paradigm shift in the university's mandate, vision, mission, academic programs, and overall structure. These changes were essential to align KUE with its new status as a specialized university dedicated to the field of education.
